Hello. I had the same problem. If you look at the clutch engaugement rod, it is installed backwards. The long part is supposed to extend past the edge of the belt, and when you dis ingauge the drive, it puts pressure against the belt to stop it from turning, and slackens up the belt so it can slip. I have been working on this McLane reel mower all day and can't figure this out. I back lapped the reel and got the reel to bed knife adjusted to cut paper perfectly. However, once I put it back together and run it the adjustment gets out of wack immediately. You can hear the contact between the reel and bed knife get tighter as it runs.
