BAYER PROCESS. The Bayer process dissolves alumina and silica from bauxite ore using sodium hydroxide, also known as caustic soda. Iron oxide, titanium oxide, and other materials don't dissolve. This waste is red in colour so is usually referred to as red mud. The solution is drawn off and CO2 is blown in under pressure.
