Uranium processing: A review of current methods and technology

Uranium is the basis of the nuclear power industry as well as military weapons programs. The unique position of uranium in these activities, the increasing ore grades that have been discovered, and increasing environmental concerns have very much influenced recent process developments. The Mining & Milling Process

Milling. Uranium milling involves extracting uranium from mined ore. The ore is crushed into sand size particles and the uranium is leached out. The uranium then is precipitated out of the leaching solution and dewatered, dried, and packaged. Through the extraction process, uranium is concentrated into a product referred to as "yellowcake."

Uranium: How is it Mined?

The milling process involves crushing and pulverizing the rock into very fine fragments and adding water to create a slurry. This slurry is then mixed with sulfuric acid or an alkaline solution to release the uranium from the host rock. Normally approximately 95 - 98% of the uranium can be recovered from the host rock.

Mining and milling

Milling follows the mining process, which is intended to extract the uranium from the ore. Milling is largely a chemical process, which yields a product much higher in uranium content than mining, but not yet pure enough for the fabrication of nuclear fuel. Several chemical processes used in milling were summarized.

plants processing uranium ore (radium is a decay product of uranium). • Prized for its use in cancer therapy, radium reached a price of 750 000 gold francs per gram in 1906 (US$10 million). It is estimated that 754 grams were produced worldwide between 1898 and 1928. Uranium itself was simply dumped as a waste material.

Natural uranium (U) occurs as a mixture of three radioactive isotopes: 238U, 235U, and 234U. Only 235U is fissionable and makes up about 0.7% of natural U, while 238U is overwhelmingly the most abundant at greater than 99% of the total mass of U. Prior to the 1940s, U was predominantly used as a coloring agent, and U-bearing ores were mined …

In Situ Leach Mining of Uranium

Once the pregnant solution is returned to the surface, the uranium is recovered in much the same way as in any other uranium plant (mill). ... precipitated with hydrogen peroxide and then dried to form the final product, U3O8. This process is repeated to remove as much uranium as is economically feasible. When mining at the site is complete ...

Uranium Conversion | NRC.gov

Uranium Conversion. After the uranium ore concentrate is produced at the mill (where it becomes uranium oxide or "yellow cake"), it is packaged in 55 gallon drums and sent to the uranium conversion plant. At the conversion facility, the yellow cake is processed and is then reacted with fluorine to create uranium hexafluoride (UF …

A review of worldwide practices for disposal of uranium mill …

The fuel for these plants is processed from uranium which is mined in about 18 countries. The milling of uranium ore produces a waste product, the mill tailings, which contains about 85% of the ore's original radioactivity, process reagent residues and often a wide range of heavy metals, all of which have the potential to degrade the environment.

Nuclear Fuel Cycle Overview

The uranium oxide product of a uranium mill is not directly usable as fuel for a nuclear reactor – additional processing is required. Only 0.7% of natural uranium is 'fissile', or capable of undergoing fission, the …

Uranium Milling Overview

Dissolved or leached uranium is concentrated, purified, and dried to become the final product: yellowcake. After milling, other companies buy the uranium and enrich it in order to use the material as nuclear fuel. The milling process creates byproduct materials. This sandy waste is often referred to as tailings and contains heavy metals and radium.

Management of wastes from uranium mines and mills
