Concerning belt grinder motor...what is optimal RPM?
I like to keep mine around 2000 - 2500 sfpm. It removes stock fairly fast but doesnt burn the stock very fast. For instance I run a home made 24" wheel at 355 RPM (using the formula SFPM = PI x D x RPM / 12) I get 2,230.5 SFPM. To get the 355 rpm I use a 5:1 reduction pulley. with a 3/4hp TEFC 1750 RPM motor.

I'm sure some of those conversions are very useful. I saw a video where a guitar luthier regularly used a Rockwell 1x42 belt sander as a grinder. He'd use push sticks to slide pices of fret wood between the lower wheel and base of the sander. It was pretty slick. I saw a similar grinder conversion at auction a while back and saved the pics.

In the case noted above we're going from 1.5 hp for the 6" wide combo unit to a 2hp belt grinder. A dedicated belt grinder usually does have other advantages, such as a variety of wheels and platens. Many (at least mine) are 2" wide and that alone offers faster spot removal rates over the 6" wide unit the OP is asking about.

The setup as-is runs a 1 5/8" drive roller (approx. 5 1/8" circumference) between 1 and 10 mph. At 5,280 feet/mile that's about 88 to 880 feet per minute if I did the math right, so it looks like it will need a bigger drive wheel. 88 feet/min is just over 200 rpm on the current drive roller.
