The Pinnacle Fly Cutter is an 11-inch-diameter tool that's used with a standard 1.5-inch milling arbor to create a cylinder head surfacing machine. According to Howards Production Manager Ben Herheim, "You can convert a Bridgeport or similar mill to surface cylinder heads, and with additional tools you can use the head fixture to cut …
The trig way. The intake face on a SBC is 35 degrees from horizontal. Tangent (35) = 0.7002 (opposite/adjacent) 1/0.7002 = 1.428. The mismatch is 0.1" so proportionally the correction is 0.1428 (rounds to 0.143) Thanks, math is …
There are 2 types of studs for this. The first type is for heads without guide plates for the push rods. These do NOT require milling the tops of the bosses and do NOT require a milling machine, but DO require a inexpensive drilling fixture available most any where. These studs are 3/8" on top and 7/16"-14 on the head end.

If you fall into that category, listen carefully. The most important part of your cylinder head is, as per Fig 6-3 and Fig 6-4, the area 1 inch before the valve seat to 1/2 inch after it on the intake and vice versa on the exhaust. Be aware that what you think is needed may not be what is wanted.
The issue of smoothness is one that is worrisome to rebuilders today. For many years, most aftermarket gasket manufacturers have recommended a head gasket surface finish of 55 to 110 micro-inches RA (roughness average), or 60 to 125 RMS (root mean square). The preferred range has traditionally been 80 to 100 RA.
6inarow said: ↑. I'm doing a 235 project and its time to do the head. Need a bit of advice now. Lower end is pretty normal - cam, bored, balanced, etc. Top end is going to have 3 carbs, dual exhaust, hei, etc. I'm just looking for a nice street engine. We have offset ground the crank and stroked it, so the compression is at 9.3 or so.

Re: cylinder head, block decks, intake manifold alignment. by rfoll » Sat Oct 10, 2015 4:20 pm. On a factory Chevy engine, you should be able to mill a little more than .020" before any alignment problems due to the fact they used steel shim head gaskets about .020"-.025" thinner than aftermarket composition gaskets.
The Edelbrock E-Tec is the Fun Team's 200-cc big-cousin version of the original GM Vortec iron head. This head offers outstanding velocity numbers, which promises great torque in a 355 or 383-ci small-block. However, the Edelbrock head does do well up around 0.500-inch lift with a 253-cfm flow number.
This calculator will calculate the amount that needs to be milled for a different angle on the head deck. The angle is the angle you want to cut off, say 1º on a 23º Chevy head. You would enter 1 into the Angle input. …
This calculator will calculate the amount that needs to be milled on the intake face side of a V8 head. Some engines have a different angle for the intake side of the head. So it is not a straight one to one ratio. Some of the popular American heads are listed. The intake flange itself could be milled, but one would have to realize the intake ...

So, if you mill .030", then you will have shaved 5cc off the combustion chamber. I'm running .030" milled LS3s on a 404 stroker. The factory LS3 chamber is 69.8cc.

Cams have just an ever so minor amount of profiling but they're very clean for just 162,xxx miles. On-time oil changes are what keep the insides nice and pretty!
by cuslog » Tue May 11, 2010 3:23 pm. I've become interested in trying to do cylinder head work on my Bridgeport type mill. I've been reading "Time to complete competition valve job" and quite fascinated by the thread. Trouble is, its an older thread, there used to be some pics that guys posted of their setups but it seems the links are now dead.

You just need to recess the valves in the head the same amount that you cut off the surface of the head. For example, if you mill the heads .004, face the valves .004 into the head so your piston to valve clearance remains the same.

At the max cut, you maybe able to get the heads down to around 70cc`s flat milling which would raise the ratio around .5 which is such a small gain the power increase would be maybe 2.5% which again brings up bang for buck making them not worth it. Example if you started out with 76cc`s and the ratio was 8.6:1.
